Nathan was probably right the other day: like it or not ,the American people are planning on using the ballot box to show their disgust with the situation in Iraq or participating in stuff like moveon.org.
As long as we have carnivalesque side-show freaks like the Workers World people leading the street movement, we will continue to see dismally low numbers. If by chance there are large numbers in the street, it will be IN SPITE OF WWP and not BECAUSE OF WWP.
The author is also right to say that "US Out" is a simplistic slogan for such a complicated situation. It has its advantages though for groups like WWP that use it as a guise to appear "all-embracing" and "non-sectarian" when the truth is that they dont dare put forward the slogan that they would like: "US OUT, Sadaam Back In".
Such "non-sectarian", lowest-common-denominator slogans almost always cloak a hidden agenda, despite the lip-service given to building a "broad" coalition.
In any case, the Left needs to put forward a positive program (not just "US OUT" or "End the Occupation") if it is to get the US people out into the streets; I think that it is apparent to many who are against the occupation that an immediate vacum in Iraq would be filled by something equally odious.
