Well, this is a widely quoted phrase from Nabokov. It is instructive to note that in one of his interviews the novelist said: "That phrase has been lifted out of context, and, like a round, deep-sea fish, has burst in the process." My own use of this quatation should also be understood in the context it originally appeared.
