The current phenomenon is harry potter stories. Equally a product of the author's cultural roots (thereby more egalitarian in tone.)
What they share is an expose of the corrupting nature of a quest for power and a notice that that quest for power can be corrupting despite the color of one's hat (white/black).
The potter stories seem much more subversive in that the audience is younger and broader.
