further, Taiwan succeeded (to the extent that it did) partly because the loss to Mao indicated to
the ruling KMT party that it had to clean up its act. On top of that they weren't allies of the
Taiwanese landlords the way they had been with the mainland landlords. (There were also
benefits because Japan -- the occupier during WW2 -- had wanted Taiwan as a breadbasket.)
