Abe Foxman's defense of the Anti-Defamation
League's granting a Distinguished Statesman Award
to Belusconi, shows what a hypocrite he is. Mr. Foxman
has been quite correctly hammering Mel Gibson
for his apparent antisemitism, but when Berlusconi
makes statements that are at least as shocking as
anything that Mel has ever done, he gets a free pass
because he is also an avid supporter of Israel and
Ariel Sharon. Presumably, if only Mel were to also
make some strong statements in support if Israel,
then he too would be labeled a "flawed friend" by
Mr. Foxman, and all would be forgiven. Then
again I remember when Pat Robertson was
similarly given an award by the American Zionist
Association, despite the fact that he is a very much
an antisemite who espouses a belief in an
international conspiracy of Jewish financiers
to take over the world. But as long as you
are a supporter of Israel then just about anything
including open antisemitism can be forgiven.
