Tibetan Buddhism may well have advanced from the drinking-from-the-skulls-of-slain-serfs mode Carrol touches on, but it was only 60 years ago. One can oppose the Chinese actions there and still not get all excited about how wonderful things were before, no matter how much people would like to fantasize that Buddhism as practiced in Tibet before the Chinese is unrelated to the brutal feudalism that prevailed there.
