HindustanTimes.com Monday, August 25, 2003 Iranian robber has fingers amputated in public Agence France-Presse Tehran, August 25 An Iranian man's fingers has been amputated in public in Isfahan, central Iran, for multiple offences of robbery, drinking alcohol and using drugs, conservative Quds daily reported on Monday. "The robber, Hossein Q, 27, who had previous records in robbery, alcoholic drink consumption and drug use, was traced and arrested after using a mobile phone he stole around March 2003," a judiciary source was quoted as saying. Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran has implemented Sharia (Islamic law). It imposes the death penalty for a variety of offences, including murder, rape, armed robbery, heavy drug trafficking, blasphemy and apostasy, and amputation for repeated thefts. © Hindustan Times Ltd. 2003.
