HindustanTimes.com Sunday, October 19, 2003 3 militants sentenced for plotting to kill Musharraf Press Trust of India Islamabad, October 19 A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced three militants belonging to a Jehadi outfit for ten years imprisonment for hatching a conspiracy to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf last year. The judge of the anti-terrorism court in Karachi, Aley Maqbool Rizvi convicted and sentenced Mohammed Imran, Mohammed Hanif and Ashraf alleged activists of Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Almi outfit for ten years rigorous imprisonment for attempting to kill Musharraf. The court, however, acquitted two others, including accused Sharib and a police Inspector Wasim Akhtar, who was also co-accused in the case, for lack of evidence. The militants attempted to assassinate Musharraf on April 26, 2002, during one of his trips to Karachi. According to prosecution the alleged plot failed as the remote-controlled bomb hidden in car failed to detonate.
