And what do you think it could be? Id really like to know what people think it is. Bushs Manichean view of the world--if he really believes it--is not rational. Could he really be convinced he has a kind of evangelical mission in the world, to purge evildoers and all that nonsense? Isnt it sort of unrealistic to assume that people like him would act rationally? [The US govt has acted irrationally plenty of times.]

And in any event, isnt control of the worlds energy resources worth something? Whos to say Iraq would ever have true, full sovereignty; a comprador government would act favorably towards US administrations in the future. Couldnt it also really be that, because the Middle East is such a hotbed of anti-American sentiment [in light of all the Western meddling there for at leats decades] something radical *would* have to be done there for long term American stability?
