The Swedish Social Democrats didn't "abandon" the more liberal bourgeois parties in their early days - they worked with them, while at the same time they were building their own power. Of course it took decades before they were ready to take power on their own.
There are people trying things like you recommend - the Labor Party, the Greens, the Working Families Party (which doesn't abandon the Dems, and therefore may be part of the problem in your view). It's really really difficult work. You write as if it's a piece of cake, if only people would wake up! It's not.
