One good reason to do so is to oppose something to the equation capitalism = democracy = capitalism that is so prominent in official discourse. 'Cause whatever it is, that Empire, democratic it is not. Obviously.

Negri's thought has always been moving around two focal points, production and constitution. Talking of Empire, as opposed to talking of capitalism, puts the constitutional question on the agenda, and so does the Magna Charta suggestion.
