Why would they want to toss the US aside? They are the US allies.Where will they get substitute exports markets of that magnitude? Which other economy can have current account deficit of $500 bn. a year?

-I agree with you, but being too dependent on one economic partner is double edge sword, as this partner have enough leverage to influence in your internal policies ( neoliberalism was forced upon Taiwan and SK in the 90´s and the results weren´t that good, right?). This is particularly true when that partner is the only world superpower. The situation of East Asia was wonderful in the cold war, when the USA had interest in their prosperity to contain communism (and tolerated policies that would have resulted in coups if implemented in Latin America), but I wonder if they aren´t starting to pay the price for their alliance with the USA. And another trouble is the coninuing necessity to keep wages in low levels and the currency devaluated to have competitive prices in the exports to USA. This is good to China and India, for now, but it´s a trouble to SK and Taiwan. -For the role of USA in the development of SK and Taiwan, there is a very good article here http://www.rrojasdatabank.org/korea0.htm
