I would question these accomplishments' ultimate value. So much of this progress seems no more than success at getting a more comfy deck chair on a sinking ship. The US is in deep crisis as a society and poses an immense, growing menace to the rest of the world. In this environment it will avail Americans little if they persist only in the complacent aim of trying to improve the lot of their own respective identity group.
