Uzbek president to oversee probe into Tashkent
explosions
TASHKENT. July 31 (Interfax) - Uzbek President Islam
Karimov has returned to his country after cutting
short his vacation in Ukraine's Crimea region to
oversee the investigation into Friday's series of
explosions in Tashkent, a source in Karimov's
executive office told Interfax on Saturday. According
to the Uzbek Interior Ministry's official press
release, three suicide bombings took place outside the
U.S. and Israeli Embassies and the Uzbek Prosecutor
General's Office in Tashkent at between 4:45 p.m. and
5:00 p.m. on July 30, 2004. Two people were killed and
nine injured. Two of them were in grave condition. All
three terrorists were killed by the explosions.
The U.S. and Israeli Embassies in Tashkent were
slightly damaged. The entrance hall of the Prosecutor
General's Office was damaged.
Uzbekistan's governmental commission looking into the
explosions has called on the country's population to
heighten vigilance and help law enforcement agencies
with the investigation. The commission extended its
profound condolences to the families who lost their
relatives in the terrorist attacks. Everything
possible is being done to assist those injured.
The terrorists involved in the explosions are being
identified and their possible links are being
established. Security at the embassies and the
country's vital facilities has been stepped up.
