Aug 12 2004 11:56AM Russia's first racial murder case begins in Voronezh VORONEZH. Aug 12 (Interfax) - The Voronezh Regional Court on Thursday will begin hearings in Russia's first racial murder case, Nikolai Nikolayenko, a court employee, told Interfax.

Three young Voronezh residents are charged with murdering Amaro Lima, a student from Guinea Bisau, in the center of the city on February 21. The murder provoked a mass protest by foreign students who boycotted classes for a week and demanded protection.

An investigating team headed by Sergei Plotnikov of the regional prosecution service detained three suspects on March 17, a 16 year-old law school student and workers Roman Ledenev, 20, and Yevgeny Shishlov, 22.

The regional prosecution service completed the investigation late in June. Ledenev and Shishlov were found to have been members of the neo-Nazi Russian National Unity party.

Racist literature was found in the apartments of all three men, a prosecution official said.

If found guilty of premeditated murder by a group based on racial or ethnic hatred, the three may be sentenced to life in prison. They partially admitted their guilt in the course of the investigation.
