When it comes to social justice, there are no moral choices, only historical ones. Often the most socially just act will be deeply immoral.
But the tricky part of this question is "Western societies", because, really, what society isn't Westernized (i.e. marketized, capitalized, consumerized, urbanized, mediatized) these days?
