I've been reading a biography of Peter the Great, and it amazing what went on in warfare in that day compared to modern standards. During the war with Sweden, fighting would basically stop during the winter months, and commanders were actually given passports through enemy territory so that they could go home or to summer resorts.
Not to say there wasn't much pillaging and looting going on, of course.
