Aug 24 2004 7:43PM Statue of Brezhnev likely to go up in Russian city KRASNODAR. Aug 24 (Interfax-South) - The Novorossiisk mayor's office on Wednesday will consider allotting land for a proposed life-size statue of former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, but will not allocate funds for the project, the mayor's spokesman Roman Shelest told Interfax.

Erecting a monument to Brezhnev in the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk was suggested by Krasnodar Legislative Assembly deputy Dmitry Shishov, who asked the mayor's office for a plot of land, Shelest said.

"The conciliation commission is deciding now which of the two proposed areas will be used for the monument," he said.
