* * * This is a call to action. Meet at 4:00 P.M. dressed in black on Tuesday, August 31st at : SOTHEBY'S AUCTION HOUSE 1334 YORK AVENUE NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Contact: ManInBlack at riseup.net

Sotheby's is located one block east of 1st Avenue at 71st street. Subway: Take the 6 train to 68th St. and walk north 3 blocks, and then east to York Ave.

On Tuesday, August 31st, the Republicans who have invaded our city plan to have an exclusive "celebration" of Johnny Cash for the Tennessee delegates inside the famous high-art auction house/ real estate investment house Sotheby's. It is sponsored by the American Gas Association, a multinational corporation whose membership includes gas companies in Brazil, Korea, and France, among others.

Well, we think that Johnny sure wouldn't be too keen on this given the beating the current administration has been giving to our nation's poor. Actually, he'd be downright pissed. Just like we are. Over the past four years, conditions for the poor and working class have worsened. There are now over 31 million Americans living in poverty. 12.2 million children in our nation are poor, with over 1.35 million of them homeless. Over 43 million Americans have no healthcare and there are currently almost 10 million unemployed Americans. (Poor People's Economic Rights Campaign)

The songs of Johnny Cash were beacons of light for those who were unjustly locked up, kicked down, and knocked around. He sang for the poor, the imprisoned, and the oppressed. He sang from his heart. How dare the Republicans think of using the memory of a true people's hero to promote their greedy causes and war-criminal president? Would Johnny support the president's economic policies? NO! Would Johnny support the Iraq war? NO! Would Johnny support the draconian Rockefeller drug laws? HELL NO!

Stand with us in streets in front of Sotheby's on A31 to raise your voice in song, in rage, and in hope. We will join together in defense of the honor of Johnny Cash. We will stand in recognition of the misery of the past four years the Bush administration has slapped upon our nation's poor and working class. We will make Johnny proud.

On a side note, later this fall, Sotheby's plans to auction off all of the personal items belonging to the late Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash (his wife, also passed on). Everything from June's childhood shoes to Cash family photos to Johnny's actual Grammys will be auctioned off to the bidder with the biggest wallet.

Bring your black clothing, pompadour, guitars (real or cardboard), hair grease, singing voice, megaphones, jailstripes, skeleton costumes, signs, art, posters, CD players, boomboxes, musical instruments, Johnny posters and records, and of course, your favorite political Cash lyrics as big as you can print 'em! Shame on the RNC!

Speakers and badass participants will be unveiled shortly at www.defendjohnnycash.org, We are trying to get Roseanne Cash, daughter of Johnny Cash, to come and speak on our behalf.
