My mom's a retired librarian, so I got a chance to hang out in "library culture". My mom and her colleagues didn't identify themselves as socialists or Marxists, but they were quite committed to the free dissemination of knowledge and info without economic and political constraint, as Doug points out. (--It's interesting to compare the relatively radical beliefs and actions of librarians to the stereotype of the dour old librarian shushing people.)
