India, Japan discuss reform of United Nations

By P.S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE, AUG. 23. Official-level talks between India and Japan were held in Tokyo today on the question of reforms in the United Nations.

An agreement was reached in New Delhi on August 12 by the External Affairs Minister, K. Natwar Singh, and the Japanese Foreign Minister, Yoriko Kawaguchi.

India and Japan agreed to support each other for permanent membership of the Security Council and work together to bring about reforms in the U.N. system.

At the Tokyo meeting, B.S. Prakash, Joint Secretary (United Nations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, and Tsuneo Nishida, Japan's Deputy Vice-Minister for Foreign Policy, discussed issues on the international agenda, in the specific context of the next annual session of the U.N. General Assembly, besides exchanging ideas on how best the two countries could cooperate on the reform issues.
