It's not this side that has the problem: a place like Pacifica ought to provide multiple ways to access the same information. Their web site doesn't _demand_ IE, why should their feed demand some other specific piece of software? Sure, Microsoft is the dominant player in this space, but there are plenty of players out their listeners might want to use.
Put it this way: you CAN use Media Player to listen to your radio shows, but you don't HAVE to.
