I don't think Gorby wanted to dissolve the SU or socialism. Chris Doss posted a recent interview with him in which he says he was not the one who dissolved the SU. ---
Gorbachev was completely against dissolving the USSR. Actually it was dissolved largely to get rid of him (no USSR = no president of the USSR). I think he wishes the USSR still existed and was slowly perestroiking its way toward a Scandinavian economic model, judging by his statements.
