Body found in Falluja not Hassan's

ISN SECURITY WATCH (02/12/04) - The body of a Western woman found in Falluja was not that of Margaret Hassan, the director of CARE in Iraq who was abducted in mid-October and believed to have been executed a month later, the British Foreign Office said yesterday. In mid- November, the Al-Jazeera Arabic television network said it had received a videotape showing "an armed man shooting at a blind-folded woman who appears to be Margaret Hassan". The videotape was not broadcast. The British Foreign Office told reporters on 17 November that it had reviewed the video obtained by Al-Jazeera and said that the woman shown in the footage was "probably" Hassan. The body of a Western woman found later in November was thought to be that of Hassan's. However, dental records have proved that the body was that of another Western woman. Officials still believe that Hassan has been executed. The 59-year-old aid worker, who had British, Irish, and Iraqi citizenship, had lived and worked in Iraq for over three decades. =============

If we had staged an election like they did in the United States, we would have been crushed a long time ago." -- Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, 4 November 2004 Commenting on U.S.election standards.
