[lbo-talk] Kinsey died of fiendish levels of masturbation, and other fun facts

I saw the Kinsey film a week or so ago and was meaning to recommend that everyone who hasn't seen it, do! I think it's an excellent invocation of the atmosphere concerning sex in American culture in the 40s and 50s, and the great contribution Kinsey made to change it. It raises the issue of how his work represented an uneasy combination of scientific rigor with political, society-changing activism. It has been criticized for not going into his personal life and relationships with his wife and others around him deeply enough, and certainly there is a lot more in that area to be explored, but how much can one film do?

When it first came out, there were reports of scattered protests at theaters, but it seems that that movement sputtered out. In Philly, admittedly deep in the heart of the blue states, it is attracting very large audiences. Hope it contributes some to the enlightenment of other places.
