Hobsbawm's communism came to this long ago, from what I understand. He loved the conservative days of the Popular Front and still openly praises FDR in his memoirs, "Interesting Times".

PS: I actually saw the two of them - Soros & Hobsbawm - in the same 
room at the launch party for Stiglitz' globalization book. I hadn't 
realized that fandom was part of the relationship!
