Nepal army courtmartials 23 soldiers for rights violation

The Royal Nepal Army has taken action against 23 soldiers for rights violation over the past one year.
Among them 15 junior level staff were sentenced to jail for a period ranging from three months to seven years, Brigadier Gen BA Kumar Sharma, chief of the army's legal division told reporters.
Six army personnel, including a major, were expelled in this connection and promotion of two other army personnel was halted, he added.
These army personnel were courtmartialled after they were found guilty of various violations, including dacoity, abduction, extortion, unjustifiable killing and terrorising people during their anti-terror operations launched in various parts of the country.
Speaking on the occasion, army spokesperson Col Deepal Gurung told the briefing that "the army is sensitive towards human rights violations."
