This reminds me of a conversation I once had with A. Shubin (who was head of the Party of Anarchists during Perestroika and is now an advisor to Boris Nemtsov of all people). He was discussing the 1996 presidential elections, in which Gorbachev got 0.1% of the vote: "Some of my friends were voting for Zyuganov; others were voting for Yavlinsky. The thought of voting for Gorbachev never came up. Why not? I'm a socialist; Gorbachev is a socialist. I'm a democrat; Gorbachev is a democrat. Why not vote for Gorbachev? Because Gorbachev is a loser, and Russians don't like losers."
