There were certainly fedual aspects in landownership, with huge landowners promoting reactionary politics and religion, and inhibiting industrialization (and the development of a real working class).

It must have something to do with the subordinate role in the global hierarchy, vs. the dominant role of the U.S., which encourages mass identification with the "We're No. 1!" mentality.
