It all depends if civil unions encompass all the rights offered by marriage, will be portable and will be recognized as the equivalent of marriage. Mariage is not only a religious institution, it is a civil one as well. What needs to be assured is that any civil rights/privileges that accrue to heterosexuals through marriage accrue to queers through civil unions. Anything less is unacceptable.
