"Why should anybody be shocked that big-time socialism hasn't happened yet? People have only been trying for 100 years."

how long have we been trying for democracy? and has it failed simply because those trying to create it are stupid, venal, mean or corrupt? do the enemies of democracy play a role in its failure? we'd all do well to remember that the enemies of socialism have played a major role in its failure, whether in the SU, china, cuba - where it maintains at least the attempt - or nicaragua...

under the circumstances of what it was up against, and especially given the helpless nature of the socialist movement in the capitalist world, what the SU achieved was astonishing, with all its faults...same for china, same for anyplace else that even tries, while we trash whoever and wherever it is, and remain helpless to stop our rulers from breaking the baby's legs, so that every one can later criticize the cripple...
