Carrol's observation was BS. Anyone who has taken poli sci 101 (or
watched the evening news several times in their life) knows that Dems
are forced to the right and the Reps to the left by the need to attract
enough centrist voters to win elections. Does that mean the Dems would
govern like socialists if not so constrained? No. But we'd probably
see a sizable increase in the welfare state relatively quickly. >>

Of course, that simple concept seems to be difficult to grasp by the
Religious Left who prefer political metaphysics built on ideals,
principles, and kindred words that are rich in emotional connotations
but short on empirical meaning.
