Since the Republicans and Democrats are two sides of the same dull coin, the least the big unions could do is take a page out of the capitalists' book and donate money to both parties. That way they always have some influence no matter which party is in power. And they could selectively support local candidates from either party to play the parties against each other on labor issues.
This seems rather obvious to me.
