Here are some observations from a friend of mine.

It’s really wonderful that the Philistines are STILL after the Jefferson Airplane! The NPR “Fresh Air!” show http://freshair.npr.org/day_fa.jhtml?todayDate=02/26/2004 panned the re-release of the first four albums. You can listen to it at the url above.

The song “Crown of Creation” was “strident,” our critic said. Wonderful! First line: ‘you are the crown of creation, and you’ve got no place to go!” I really hope that line was lost on the critic. Strident? Yes! Thank you, punk!

“Crown” was a fight song for a generation at the battle line, hurling at its adversaries the anthem: ‘I am nothing, I should be everything’ and making the subject plural. You and we—should be everything. Find a copy of “Crown.” Put the title track on and crank it up loud enough to break windows—you’ll laugh so hard you’ll crack the walls!

The reviewer didn’t mention the facts of the Airplane’s history. Their single “Mexico” and its flip “Saucers” were pulled off the air when the Nixon regime pressured the record companies and radio stations to remove politically sensitive songs in late ’69 to early ‘70.

“Mexico” had the added onus of attacking Nixon directly for his “Operation Intercept,” a plan to intercept pot from Mexico. That operation also targeted radio stations and record companies, thus “Mexico” got pulled for both reasons. After that RCA records screwed up their distribution, they essentially ended their airplay for all but “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.” The Airplane had to form a new company to put out records, without airplay except for the most insipid Starship muck.

Another Co-intelpro op of the era targeted the underground press. The fbi pressured record companies to pull advertising from underground papers, and the companies responded eagerly. That action led to the demise of most real undergrounds and the rise of tacky sex tabloids. In one move the nixonoids muted radical rock and radical newspapers!

The Airplane has the honor of still being dangerous. “Don’t change before the empire falls, you’ll laugh so hard you’ll crack the walls!”

Jefferson Airplane, Crown of Creation

You are the crown of creation You are the crown of creation And you've got no place to go

Soon you'll attain the stability you strive for In the only way that it's granted In a place among the fossils of our time

In loyalty to their kind They cannot tolerate our minds And in loyalty to our kind We cannot tolerate their obstruction

Life is change How it differs from the rocks I've seen their ways too often for my liking New worlds to gain My life is to survive And be alive For you
