Doug: "No one said they love "us." But even if it's just one in five Iraqis 
who hate the U.S., that's a lot of people who can do a lot of damage. 
And if another one or two out of the five don't care much either way, 
then they're not going to turn anyone in. From the soldier's point of 
view, looking into a crowd where 20% or 40% of the members would like 
to kill you, you'd be tempted to shoot randomly, wouldn't you?

In the Segev book about the British in Palestine, both Arabs and Jews often had very positive views of the British--and both intended, all along, to kick them out by force if necessary---even though the British really did built schools, hospitals, etc. It's like in that Monty Python movie where the guerillas agreed that the Romans had done a lot, and then vowed to boot them.
