Nader Takes A Beating From Hartford Green Hartford Courant, January 7, 2004
Conservative columnist and television host Robert Novak used a quote from Councilwoman Elizabeth Horton Sheff to bludgeon Ralph Nader on an episode of CNN's Crossfire on Monday.
Nader was discussing another presidential run as a member of the Green Party, the political home of Horton Sheff. Arguing that Nader was out of touch, Novak bolstered his point with a comment Horton Sheff made to The Nation.
"His appeal is not broad enough to reach my community," said Horton Sheff, who is black.
"Isn't that your problem as the leader of the left," Novak asked Nader, "that the blacks just don't like you?"
Nader was stunned. After all, he said, he had endorsed Horton Sheff at a press conference in Hartford years ago.
"What do you do with this?" Nader said. "I mean, when she was in short pants, I was fighting for civil rights. I was against the kind of standardized testing that was racial in impact, fighting against redlining, fighting against predatory lending, fighting against these rip-offs in the inner city, against asbestos contamination, asthma. What are you talking about?"
Horton Sheff was unapologetic Tuesday. She conceded that Nader did endorse her - in 1999.
"Where has he been since then?" Horton Sheff said. "He doesn't come to help with my campaigns."
