If not, what makes it much different from academic
anything? Except possibly certain sorts of history.
But it does seem to be the case that in the US,
academic economists play a sort of public
intellectual/public policy role played by other sorts
of intellectuals in other societies -- philosophers
and sociologists in France or Germany, for example, or
writers in England. jks
