Hmm, where'd you get these numbers? Here's what I have for 1993 from Branko Milanovic at the World Bank. The figures are pretty old, but generally these things don't change too much over a decade.

Brazil 59.0 Malaysia 46.3 (49) Thailand 45.6 USA 39.4 Korea 31.0 (32) Taiwan 29.3 (33) China (urban) 27.1 (40 overall) Japan 24.3

-I got my numbers here. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/eco_dis_of_fam_inc_gin_ind&int=-1 -Actually they are not very different from yours, except in case of South Korea, but in this case the last number I have is from 1993. I don´t remember where I got 36, but I will check. I think unequalities probably worsened in SK in the 90´s just like in every country subjected to "free market" reforms. I think the homepage of WB has more recent data, but, as you says, it didn´t change too much from what you have (except maybe in Taiwan. I got 34,5 in the Taipei times). Will bring more data as soon as possible.
