Very good piece in Socialist Register 2003 by Hugh Roberts, compacting down his book on Algeria for Verso, "The Algerian Catastrophe: Lessons for the Left." (According to a piece on the WSWS http://www.wsws.org/articles/2001/jun2001/alge-j30.shtml that I sent here http://nuance.dhs.org/lbo-talk/0204/2794.html in 2002, about 100,000 have killed in the 90's in Algeria in the conflict w/ the Islamists.)

This afternoon was flipping through (after a really conflictual meeting with a dozen ex-Trotskyists, CCDS'ers, union staffers on Dean vs. Kucinich, yee-haw!) a great new book by Timothy Bewes, a NLR contributor, on reification. One chapter deals w/ Fanon.

(And, Shane whas that in HTML btw? And, though I could, could you tell the rest of the list all about Pabloite liquidationism? Ernest Mandel -- degeneration of a former Trotskyist ... Mandel joined the Belgian Trotskyist movement during World War II and became ... the International Secretariat of the Fourth International, Michel Pablo began to ... http://www.mit.edu/people/fjk/essays/mandel.html )

In the copy of another book I was perusing this afternook, was a leaflet for a Amiri Baraka appearance at La Pena, a Berkeley left institution founded by Chilean left exiles from the MIR. One of the grants to finance his tour was from the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Foundation. Heh.
