I dislike Friedman's global economic analysis, but this column says nothing he hasn't been saying on and off for years. His position has been for years that the US should force Israel, by negotiation or by threat, to get out of the West Bank and Gaza, and then the US and UN should drop peace-keeping forces in Palestinian areas to keep suicide bombers and such in line. Although as this article says, he thinks that Israel withdrawal will largely end most Palestinian terrorism by undermining its legitimacy in the Arab world and among Palestinians global supporters.

People get turned off by Friedman's snide elitist rhetoric, but in substance, his position is actually pretty strongly pro-Palestinian, at least within the context of US politics.
