Research budgets are being drastically cut. As a merely personal preference, I've always found more sublimity and learning in theoretical physics, paleobiology, and neuroscience than in space exploration. They quashed a new particle beam whatyoumaycallit (I can't remember the details now) a couple of years ago because it was too expensive. But none of us will have much to say about it anyhow.
