I've spent the last twenty years turning down management opportunities. This year I finally accepted a "technical lead" position -- meaning I get to be mentor, organizer, communicator, and scheduler on top of existing writing duties. I do believe that is as far "up" as I'm willing to go.
In twenty years of technical writing, I've had exactly one great manager. Her name, oddly enough, was Angel. She lasted a few years and then she went back to being a regular writer.
