When the working class was basically starving to death, it was fashionable and righteous to be overweight and dreary to be thin.

Now that the working class is stuck in sedentary, unending work; does not have the energy to exercise; and consumes much junk food... and the upper class has the money/time for personal trainers, organic food, minimalist cooks, exercise, and plastic surgery, ....

....(deep breath) it is fashionable/virtuous to be thin and gross/vulgar to be overweight.
