I think the correct left perspective is to see this "embrace of ignorance" as a reasonable attitude in the absence of events that give hope of action. That's one of the reasons I am somewhat leary of Ted's "rational consciousness." I prefer to see people as reacting rationally to the world as it presents itself to them. The model for this is the extreme reluctance of the peasants of Long Bow to speak their wrongs, even when the village had been liberated from the Nationalist Armies. It was a long struggle for the village party to create conditions which made it suddenly rational to be be courageous and know. (Hinton, FAnshen)
