[lbo-talk] 'Desperado'

In brave neo-South Africa today, where many former anti-apartheid stalwarts are now fully fledged capitalists presiding over worse conditions for ordinary South Africans than under apartheid (indeed people speak nostalgically about 'the good old days under apartheid') no-one would begrudge Ronstadt for having played in Sun City. Issues such as who did or did not play in Sun City were purely symbolic matters that failed to address the fundamental questions under apartheid. It should have been as much of crime to play in Lagos given that the government of Nigeria was as callous to its people as the govt. in South Africa. To the extent apartheid was a variant of capitalism and to the extent capitalism is embraced in post-apartheid South Africa and to the extent the music industry is also capitalist, there is little significance to Ronstadt having played in Sun City.

And the essential point, which you have not addressed, remains that Ronstadt is 'a lefty' or certainly a liberal (those terms being rather interchangeable) and that is why she supported Moore and was attacked for doing so.
