The point he was trying to make was not that it isn't important to defeat Bush -- like all sane people, he takes this as a given -- but that it's important to keep the pressure on after the election. He wants to make sure that people do not demobilize, and he warns that the Democratic Party will likely become not so much a party as a "hollow" vehicle for Kerry's personal goals, just as it was for Clinton and has been for Democratic presidents generally. He's arguing for keeping organizations like ACT, MoveOn, et. al., going even after the election. You know, the kind of thing that leftists are supposed to be for. The ones who are capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time, at least.
