[lbo-talk] Barack Obama

Part of Obama's success is owed to the fact that the leader in the demo polls, Blair Hull had his candidacy sunk due to public scandal. (Which subsequently occurred with his republican challenger, Jack Ryan) Obama was also unwilling to engage in much negative campaigning during the primary which featured 7 candidates in all. He waited until relatively late in the campaign to push his message and visibility after the public had grown weary of the other candidates gnawing on each other's skulls. Very smart.

It's also interesting to add that Obama had as much if not more trouble securing the support of urban black machine political leaders than in attracting white voters. Chicago Sun Times reporter, Laura Washington wrote, "Is Barack black enough?" Being well-acquainted with Chicago politics, machine resistance to endorse a candidacy should be viewed as a hopeful sign.

His politics are solidly progressive. He's black and has an African name and he somehow connects with conservative white voters in downstate Illinois. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
