i guess what i'm trying to say is, how do build movements which BOTH fight for "bread-and-butter" everyday reforms, and ALSO for far-reaching, transformative, radical social change (current unions, with some exceptions, seem unable to do the first and woefully ignorant of and/or hostile to the second concept). i think carrol is right in saying that in the u.s. context, you can't have one without the other.
