no, i'm not making the argument that we should hope for workers to get fucked over even worse or that "it has to get worse before it gets better," arguments i've always had a problem with.

i guess what i'm trying to say is, how do build movements which BOTH fight for "bread-and-butter" everyday reforms, and ALSO for far-reaching, transformative, radical social change (current unions, with some exceptions, seem unable to do the first and woefully ignorant of and/or hostile to the second concept). i think carrol is right in saying that in the u.s. context, you can't have one without the other.
