>DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN LIBERATION: WHAT'S MARX GOT TO DO WITH IT?
>
>In August demonstrators will fill the streets protesting the Republican
National Convention and the Bush administration's policies which have
brought us savage war, favored his rich cronies at the cruel expense of the
working class and poor, and devastated the natural environment. Protesters
will be demanding true democracy, but what does democracy look like?
>
>Are capitalism and democracy fundamentally at odds? This 4-day intensive
introduction will examine Marxist theory through the relevant lens of such
contemporary questions. Through lectures, readings and lively discussion, in
an open-minded environment, students will become familiar with the major
concepts in Marxist thought and -we hope -begin a lifelong engagement with
these ideas. Participants will be encouraged to bring questions from their
own activist practice and reading.
>
>The Intensive will examine patriarchy, racism and militarism and
>will also provide an opportunity for engagement with issues of social consent
and how that is created through the examination of education, popular
culture,media and repression.
