No, it's been discarded. The most common viewpoint in psych nowadays is the heredity and environmental factors interact to produce psychological traits and disorders. It's a typical pattern: people get all worked up about the "mice pup" research, then we do careful research with humans (e.g., twin studies, adoption studies), and we find that biological factors influence but do not ultimately determine complex human characteristics (e.g., alcoholism, sexual orientation, IQ, personality traits, schizophrenia, mood disorders, and so on.)
